Meghalaya Marks 53rd Statehood Day with Cultural Pride and Sustainable Vision
Shillong: Meghalaya celebrated its 53rd Statehood Day on January 21 with vibrant festivities across districts, highlighting its journey of progress and dedication to sustainable development.
The state’s achievements in agriculture, education, and healthcare were at the forefront of the celebrations, as leaders and citizens came together to honor Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and bright future.
In South West Garo Hills (SWGH), the district earned accolades for securing the top rank in Meghalaya for incremental progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At a ceremony in Ampati, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the district’s agricultural potential, describing it as Meghalaya’s future “rice bowl” due to its fertile soil.
The district was also recognized for achieving surplus fish production through sustainable practices, reflecting its commitment to innovation and self-sufficiency.
The Meghalaya Day Run added a competitive edge to the celebrations, with Kanen M. Sangma of Bongoara Village claiming victory in the men’s category with a time of 36:38 minutes, while Ringsechimik G. Sangma from Chegitchakgre Village won the women’s race, finishing in 54:07 minutes.
In Nongpoh, the headquarters of Ri Bhoi District, MLA Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh joined Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal and other dignitaries in commemorating the day.
A visual presentation on the Hills State Movement served as a reminder of the state’s historic struggle for autonomy, while the Nongkhrah cultural troupe performed the traditional dance “Ka Shad Sajer,” symbolizing the region’s vibrant heritage.
Deputy Commissioner Baranwal emphasized the critical role of government employees in propelling the state toward greater development and prosperity.
In Shillong, East Khasi Hills District hosted celebrations at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. Deputy Commissioner R. M. Kurbah, IAS, underscored Meghalaya’s youthful population as a key driver of its future success.
The event featured cultural performances by children from Boys Home and Girls Home, Mawkasiang, and honored the Cleanest Locality in Shillong, promoting the state’s vision for sustainable and inclusive growth.
As part of the statewide festivities, government buildings and institutions were illuminated, symbolizing the state’s transformation since its formation in 1972. Officials and citizens alike reflected on Meghalaya’s achievements while acknowledging the challenges ahead. The celebrations reinforced the state’s commitment to preserving its cultural roots while embracing progress, ensuring an inclusive and prosperous future for all.
