Meghalaya: Mawlai SC Defeat Sawmer SC 2-1 to End First Leg of OC Blue Shillong Premier League 2024
Shillong: Reigning champions Mawlai SC secured a 2-1 victory over Sawmer SC in the final match of the first leg of the OC Blue Shillong Premier League 2024 at the SSA Stadium on January 21.
The win, earned through goals from Damanbhalang Chyne (42’) and Robertson Khongriah (83’), saw Mawlai continue their strong title defense.
Hilford Lyngkhei (48’) scored the lone goal for Sawmer, which brought them back to level terms shortly after halftime. However, Robertson Khongriah’s goal late in the second half secured the win for Mawlai, who remain undefeated with 25 points from eight wins and one draw.
The victory maintained Mawlai’s top position in the league, with Shillong Lajong FC (22 points) and Rangdajied United FC (19 points) following closely behind. The relegation zone sees Nongthymmai SC and Ryntih FC in danger.
The match saw a hard-fought battle, with Mawlai breaking the deadlock in the 42nd minute through Damanbhalang Chyne’s rebound goal after a scramble in the box. After halftime, Sawmer came back strong, with Lyngkhei heading in a free-kick delivery from Orestar Sad to equalize. Sawmer’s Hilford Lyngkhei nearly put his side ahead again but was denied by Mawlai goalkeeper Lambhamiki Lamare.
Mawlai kept the pressure on and managed to score the decisive goal when Robertson Khongriah bundled in the rebound from an Overkindness L Mawnai cross, sealing the win for the champions.
The second leg of the league kicks off today, featuring a double-header with Nangkiew Irat SC facing Rangdajied United FC, followed by Nongrim Hills SC taking on Langsning FC at 2:30 PM.
