Meghalaya Motocross Champion Eugene Niangti Assaulted by Tourist at Ri-Bhoi Park

Shillong: Eugene Niangti, one of Meghalaya’s most prominent motocross racers, was allegedly assaulted by an inebriated tourist from Uttar Pradesh at a fun park in the state’s Ri-Bhoi district. The incident occurred on Saturday and has since drawn public concern, though Niangti chose not to file a police complaint.

According to the racer, the altercation began when a tourist, part of a group visiting the park, began vandalizing sections of the park’s haunted house attraction. “A man hailing from UP, who visited the park along with his group, assaulted me on Saturday. He was under the influence of alcohol,” Niangti told PTI. The tourist allegedly became aggressive and physically attacked Niangti when confronted about the damage.

Despite sustaining minor injuries, Niangti decided not to press charges against the assailant. “He was a tourist, and I did not want to file a complaint,” he said, citing a desire to avoid escalating the matter further. Following the incident, the group was asked to leave the premises, and they complied without further disruption.

Ri-Bhoi District Superintendent of Police, VS Rathore, confirmed that the police have taken note of the matter and are currently investigating. While no official complaint has been lodged, authorities are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident and assessing whether legal action is necessary.

The episode has sparked local conversation about the treatment of public figures and the growing need for responsible tourism in Meghalaya, a state known for its natural beauty and peaceful hospitality.
