Meghalaya Mourns Passing of “People’s Pope,” Recalls Personal Meeting

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has conveyed his profound sadness upon learning of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In a statement released earlier today, CM Sangma described the late Pontiff as a “People’s Pope,” emphasizing the lasting impact of his life characterized by humility, compassion, and love.

The chief minister took to his official X account to express his grief, noting, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of His Holiness Pope Francis.” He highlighted the Pope’s exemplary leadership as the Head of the Roman Catholic Church, stating that his life served as a powerful testament to the virtues of humility, love, and compassion, inspiring countless individuals across the globe.

Reflecting on the Pope’s enduring legacy, CM Sangma remarked, “His Papacy will be remembered and cherished as he advocated for peace across the world.” The chief minister underscored the late Pope’s unwavering commitment to global peace and his tireless efforts to foster harmony among nations.

Adding a personal touch to his tribute, CM Sangma recalled a significant moment during his visit to the Vatican in December 2022. “I requested him to pray for the state, the nation, and its people,” he shared, highlighting the Pope’s concern for the well-being of Meghalaya and its inhabitants.

In his concluding remarks, CM Sangma referred to the late Pope as “the Shepherd of the Church, a Global Leader, and the People’s Pope.” He acknowledged the immense loss felt by the world, emphasizing that Pope Francis’s life would continue to serve as a guiding light for future generations. “May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he concluded.
