Meghalaya: Narcotics Worth 4 Crore Incinerated to Combat Drug Menace

Northeast Desk, 10th November: In an effort to combat the drug menace, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances with a value of 4 crore were incinerated at the Star Cement Plant in Lumshnong, East Jaintia Hills District. The incineration utilized the furnace at the plant to dispose of substances confiscated in multiple cases.

The confiscated consignments, originating from more than 51 cases across the state, included heroin valued at 3 crore, cannabis, and cough syrup with a total worth of 80 lakh and 20 lakhs, respectively. Dr. L.R. Bishnoi, IPS Director General of Police, revealed that over 500 drug traffickers were apprehended during this operation, expressing concern about the increasing numbers of individuals involved in drug use, including a rising prevalence of female drug users.

Dr. Bishnoi highlighted the adherence to due process and the meticulous following of Supreme Court orders regarding the disposal of seized drugs. Permissions from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board were obtained to ensure proper disposal without causing pollution.

The police have adopted six strategic approaches in their battle against drug-related issues, including awareness campaigns at the community level, programs in educational institutions, and leveraging technology. Dr. Bishnoi emphasized the importance of community and media support, calling for collaboration to effectively combat the drug menace in Meghalaya.
