Meghalaya: National Commission for Minorities Holds Meeting on Anand Marriage Act Implementation
Northeast Desk, 9th July: The National Commission for Minorities convened a video conference with representatives from 18 States and Union Territories to discuss the implementation and registration of Sikh marriages under the Anand Marriage Act.
During the meeting, Meghalaya reported that it has successfully implemented the Anand Marriage Act, allowing Sikhs to register their marriages under a separate legal framework distinct from the Hindu Marriage Act. The Anand Marriage Act specifically recognizes the Sikh marriage ceremony known as Anand Karaj.
Other states, including Jharkhand and Maharashtra, also confirmed the implementation of the Act. The remaining States and Union Territories committed to enacting the Anand Marriage Act within the next two months, ensuring uniform recognition and registration of Sikh marriages across India.
The move aims to streamline the legal recognition of Sikh marriages and provide a distinct identity to the community’s matrimonial customs, fostering greater inclusivity and respect for cultural diversity.
