Meghalaya: NEC Employee in Shillong Sent to Judicial Custody Over Alleged Molestation of Colleague
Northeast Desk, 21st August: In a disturbing case from Shillong, a 58-year-old employee of the North Eastern Council (NEC), Shambhu Sharma, has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody following allegations of molesting a female colleague. Sharma, who served as a cashier at the NEC office, was arrested on Monday, August 19, after a 21-year-old contractual employee filed a complaint against him.
The incident reportedly took place while the victim was working under Sharma’s supervision. She, along with representatives from the Mawpat Dorbar Shnong, approached the Laitumkhrah Police Station to lodge an FIR, accusing Sharma of molestation. The police swiftly detained Sharma to investigate the claims.
As part of the legal process, the victim was taken to Ganesh Das Government Maternal & Child Health Hospital for a medical examination. On August 20, Sharma was presented before the District and Session Judge, who ordered his placement in judicial custody for 14 days while the investigation continues.
The case has sparked concerns within the NEC community, highlighting issues of workplace safety and the importance of maintaining a harassment-free environment for all employees.
