Meghalaya: NEHU Acting VC Appeals to Striking Students to End Protest, Assures of Student Welfare
Shillong: Amidst escalating tensions at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nirmalendu Saha, has urged the striking students to end their 15-day hunger strike.
The students’ protest, which began on November 5, is fueled by demands including the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla, the Registrar, Deputy Registrar, and other officials.
In a statement, Prof. Saha expressed concern over the deteriorating health of the students and appealed to them to prioritize their well-being. He assured the students that the university administration is committed to addressing their grievances and ensuring a conducive academic environment.
To monitor the health of the striking students, medical teams have been deployed to the protest site. The Acting VC has also held discussions with representatives of the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), and NEHU Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
It is worth noting that the students’ protest began after Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shukla went on a 14-day leave, leading to Prof. Saha’s appointment as the Acting VC.
