Meghalaya: NEHU Braces for High-Stakes EC Meet Amidst Governance Tussle
Shillong: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is on tenterhooks as its Executive Council (EC) prepares for a critical meeting in Delhi on May 30, a gathering expected to address the deep-seated governance and leadership issues plaguing the institution.
The air of uncertainty thickened after Vice Chancellor Prof PS Shukla deemed the recent May 21 Academic Council meeting “illegal,” indicating his intent to convene a fresh one after the EC session.
Prof Shukla also shed light on the recent visit by a two-member team from the Ministry of Education to Shillong, confirming that they engaged in discussions with him subsequent to their interactions with other university stakeholders. Interestingly, Prof Shukla had initially slated a new Academic Council meeting for May 23 but opted for a deferment, choosing to await the deliberations of the upcoming EC meeting in the national capital.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP WR Kharlukhi, speaking after NEHU’s 52nd foundation day celebrations on Monday, affirmed that the May 30 EC meeting has been convened specifically to untangle the university’s persistent crisis. His comments hinted at the active involvement of central authorities in navigating the turbulent waters at NEHU.
Kharlukhi further expressed optimism regarding the university’s current state, suggesting a gradual stabilisation following the appointment of Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Sherwin M Sugnoh. “Teachers and students attended a meeting today. Things are improving and returning to normal,” he remarked, indicating a positive shift in the campus atmosphere. When pressed on the demand for the removal of VC Prof Shukla, Kharlukhi chose to reserve his comments, advising patience until the outcome of the EC meeting is revealed.
