Meghalaya: NEHU Forms Internal Committee Amid Ministry Probe into Alleged Mismanagement
Shillong: Amid mounting protests and allegations of administrative failures, Meghalaya’s North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has constituted an internal committee to draft a report addressing concerns raised by stakeholders. The report will be submitted to the Ministry of Education, which recently initiated its own probe into the alleged mismanagement within the university.
The NEHU-formed committee will be led by NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) President, Lakhon Kma, as Chairman, and will include representatives from various university groups, including NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) – NEHU unit, senior professors, and other stakeholders.
This development comes after the Ministry of Education issued an official order on November 14, announcing its decision to investigate “serious concerns raised by students, student associations, and media reports.”
The move also coincides with a surge in student-led protests, including an indefinite hunger strike now entering its 14th day. The students have locked down the university since November 6, demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor P.S. Shukla, the removal of the Registrar, and other key administrative changes.
Protestors have accused the university’s leadership of inefficiency and alleged negligence in addressing pressing academic and infrastructural issues. The escalating demonstrations prompted the Ministry to intervene, heightening scrutiny on the university’s operations.
With the internal committee now tasked with presenting its findings, stakeholders hope the process will pave the way for resolving the ongoing crisis and restoring confidence in NEHU’s administration. However, tensions remain high as students continue their demonstrations, insisting on accountability and structural reforms.
