Meghalaya: NEHU Hosts Workshop on “Three New Criminal Laws 2023” with Focus on Legal Reforms
Northeast Desk, 16th July: North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) recently conducted a one-day workshop titled “Three New Criminal Laws 2023,” featuring insights from Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, I Nongrang, IPS.
Organized in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research – North Eastern Regional Centre (ICSSR-NERC), the event brought together legal experts and law enforcement officials to deliberate on the implications of recent legislative changes.
In her keynote address, DGP Nongrang underscored the importance of responsible policing and the need for updated guidelines to effectively implement the new laws. She highlighted challenges posed by technological advancements, particularly electronic documentary evidence, within the framework of these legal reforms.
NEHU’s Vice Chancellor In-Charge, Professor DK Nayak, inaugurated the workshop, which featured two technical sessions. The first session, chaired by N Nongkynrih, Director of the Directorate of Forensic Science, Shillong, included presentations from senior legal professionals and law enforcement officers offering practical insights into the application of the new criminal laws.
The second session, a panel discussion chaired by Dr RK Mishra, allowed experts to explore diverse perspectives on the legislation, fostering a comprehensive understanding among participants. Professor B. Panda, Honorary Director of ICSSR-NERC, Shillong, concluded the event with remarks underscoring the significance of continuous legal education.
The workshop serves as a pivotal initiative in equipping legal and law enforcement professionals in the region to adeptly navigate the evolving landscape of criminal justice.
