Meghalaya: NEHU Protests Continue as Students Demand VC’s Resignation Amid Hunger Strike
Shillong: The ongoing protests at North-Eastern Hills University (NEHU) entered their fifth day on November 10, with students maintaining a hunger strike in response to unaddressed demands.
Despite appeals from Vice Chancellor Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla for dialogue and the well-being of the students, the strike continues with many students hospitalized due to health complications.
The students, led by the North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), are demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, the removal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, the appointment of a Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Tura campus, and the swift holding of PGSU elections.
The university has been under a complete lockdown since November 6, with operations disrupted. Faculty members, including NEHUTA President Prof. Lakhon Kma, have met with Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar, who has expressed concern over the situation and called for the students to return to their classes. He has also directed all stakeholders to submit suggestions to help resolve the crisis.
