Meghalaya: NEHU Vice-Chancellor Extends Leave Amid Rising Campus Tensions

Shillong: Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, Vice-Chancellor of Meghalaya’s North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), has extended his earned leave for the fourth time, now seeking an extension until January 19.

In an email addressed to the university registrar, Prof. Shukla cited “same circumstances” as the reason for his continued absence, referring to his earlier communication dated December 1, 2024.

The email stated, “In continuation of my email dated 1st December, 2024 regarding my earned leave, I request an extension of the same from January 13 till January 17 (with suffix 18 & 19 January) due to the same circumstances.” Prof. Shukla assured that he remains accessible via phone or email for any urgent academic or administrative matters.

Previously, the VC had been on leave until January 12. His prolonged absence comes amidst mounting unrest at NEHU, where students and faculty have been demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and other officials over unresolved administrative and institutional issues.

The repeated leave extensions have fueled speculation among stakeholders, further intensifying calls for immediate resolution of the ongoing tensions within the university.
