Meghalaya: NGOs Boycott Meeting Over Cenotaph Renovation Amidst Administrative Irregularities

Shillong: A controversy has erupted over the proposed redevelopment of a significant local cenotaph in Garo Hills, commemorating the Garo Labour Corps. The Joint Forum of NGOs from Garo Hills has announced its refusal to participate in a planned meeting, citing serious administrative irregularities and concerns about representation.

At the heart of the issue lies the inconsistent official communication and questions surrounding the committee’s composition. The forum pointed out that two notifications for the committee’s formation were issued on the same date, March 22, 2025. One version was posted on the Deputy Commissioner’s Facebook page, while a seemingly identical notification was reposted the following day. Furthermore, the official hard copy of the meeting invitation was received late, fueling concerns about transparency.

The NGO forum also objects to the inclusion of key officials, such as the CEO of TMB and the Deputy Commissioner, as both chairman and committee members. They argue that this could compromise the decision-making process, stating that their role should be limited to providing clarification when required. Additionally, the forum highlights the lack of representation from academicians, historians, and social activists, who are crucial to preserving the historical significance of the cenotaph.

The Joint NGOs Forum had previously submitted a letter to the Chief Minister on March 23, 2025, detailing their concerns, but has yet to receive an official response. By boycotting the meeting, the forum demands a more inclusive and transparent approach to the cenotaph’s renovation, calling for a redevelopment process that genuinely reflects community interests and upholds democratic principles.
