Meghalaya: NPP Candidate Sniawabhalang Dhar Wins

Guwahati: Leader of the National People’s Party (NPP) Sniawabhalang Dhar won the Nartiang constituency on March 2 by a margin of 1947 votes.

This is the NPP’s first victory in an assembly election.

The National People’s Party (NPP) which is led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had reached the halfway point with a lead of 30 seats. However, that lead was later reduced to 24 seats.

According to the Election Commission (ECI), 63.91% of eligible voters turned out for the recently held Assembly elections.

Out of Meghalaya’s 60 Assembly districts, 36 are in the Khasi Jaintia Hills region and 24 are in the Garo Hills region.

It is important to note that voting in the Sohiong Assembly constituency was delayed after HDR Lyngdoh, a former state home minister and candidate for the seat on behalf of the United Democratic Party (UDP) who passed away.

Around 21 lakh people cast ballots of whom 10.99 lakh were female and 10.68 lakh were male.

In addition, there were 369 other contenders, 36 of them were female.

Following the election, the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) had 119 companies deployed in Meghalaya by the Election Commission of India.
