Meghalaya NPP MLA Steps Down, Possibly Joining Trinamool Congress

Guwahati: The party scene in Meghalaya is still going strong just before the assembly elections.

On January 4, 2023, National People’s Party (NPP) MLA SG Esmatur Mominin of the Phulbari constituency withdrew from the ruling party in the most recent game of musical chairs between political parties.

On January 5, 2023, the MLA is reportedly planning to join the Trinamool Congress.

Earlier on January 4, 2023, three more MLAs which include one cabinet minister of the Meghalaya government will be soon joining chief minister Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP).

The three MLAs who will be joining NPP this week are cabinet minister and Mylliem Legislator Hamletson Dohling, Umsning MLA Jason Sawkmie Mawlong and Sohiong and former Cabinet Minister Samlin Malngiang.

According to reports, Sohiong and former Cabinet Minister Samlin Malngiang will join the NPP on January 10, while Mylliem legislator Hamletson Dohling and umsning lawmaker Jason Sawkmie Mawlong would do so on Saturday, or January 7.

 Malngiang is a member of the Hill State People’s Party (HSPDP), while Hamletson and Jason are members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDF) .

Suspended Congress MLA Kimfa Marbaniang joined the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) on December 29 in advance of the state legislature election.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP National president Conrad Sangma also welcomed Kimfa Marbaniang to the party.

“Together, we will continue to serve the people of West Khasi Hills and the border areas and ensure we take them towards greater progress,” said Conrad Sangma.
