Meghalaya: NPP Poised to Announce High-Profile Candidate for Gambegre Bypolls

Northeast Desk, 4th July: Meghalaya’s National People’s Party (NPP) has reportedly concluded its selection process for the upcoming Gambegre Assembly seat bypolls, with party sources indicating that a high-profile candidate has been chosen. Insiders suggest that Mehtab Chandee, wife of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, has emerged as the party’s likely nominee, although official confirmation is still pending.

According to media reports, the party will hold another round of discussions before making the candidate’s name public.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, on June 29, asserted that the decision to finalize a contender for the Gambegre bypolls has not caused any rifts within his family or the National People’s Party. Reports indicate that a total of eight names were considered.

CM Sangma’s statement came after news surfaced that his wife, Mehtab Chandee, was among the top contenders for the critical bypolls. Additionally, reports indicate that CM’s brother, James PK Sangma, was also in the running for the party ticket, and there has been speculation about potential discontent regarding the selection process.

The NPP’s decision in the Gambegre bypolls is being closely watched, given the potential implications for party dynamics and future electoral outcomes.
