Meghalaya: NPP Reaffirms Dedication to Peace Talks Despite HNLC’s Withdrawal

Northeast Desk, 9th January: Ampareen Lyngdoh, Meghalaya’s Health Minister and a leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), reiterated the party’s commitment to advising the state government on continuing peace talks with the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), despite the recent withdrawal of the group from negotiations.

The HNLC, labeled a banned militant outfit, cited a ‘trust deficit’ with the government, setting conditions such as dropping cases against their members and leaders and granting general amnesty for resuming the dialogue.

Lyngdoh addressed the media, expressing the NPP’s commitment to achieving an amicable understanding for long-term peace in the region. She acknowledged certain displeasures and misunderstandings between the involved parties, stating that these issues are yet to be verified. The Health Minister indicated that the party and government are awaiting the return of the Home Minister to provide further insight into the situation.

On January 3, the HNLC announced their withdrawal from peace talks, citing perceived government apathy towards their demands. Sadon Blah, a representative of the HNLC, emphasized that actions like issuing summons to HNLC leaders contributed to the trust deficit, undermining the ongoing peace process.

The NPP’s stance is crystal clear: they are eager to proceed with the peace talks and remain hopeful for a resolution that fosters lasting peace. The party’s commitment to the peace process is unwavering, even in the face of challenges, as they diligently work towards reconciling differences and addressing the concerns of the HNLC for the betterment of Meghalaya.
