Meghalaya: NPP Withdraws Support from BJP-Led Government in Manipur, Cites Leadership Failures

Shillong: In a pivotal political development, Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Conrad Sangma announced on November 18 that the party has decided to withdraw its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, headed by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

The announcement came during the fourth edition of the Shillong Literary Festival, where Sangma expressed grave concerns over the worsening situation in Manipur. Sangma highlighted that despite sustained efforts from both the central and state governments, conditions in the conflict-stricken state have shown no signs of improvement.

“The situation in Manipur has reached a breaking point. Despite our numerous discussions and attempts to support peace initiatives, the lack of trust and effective measures from the current leadership has led us to lose all confidence in this administration,” Sangma declared during his address.

Sangma underscored that the NPP’s decision was not driven by political motives but stemmed from a commitment to restoring stability and trust in Manipur. He noted that the administration’s inability to bridge the trust gap between the government and the people has further exacerbated the ongoing crisis.

“The lack of confidence in the system and the absence of trust-building measures have created an environment where actions are failing to deliver results. In this context, we can no longer stand by the Biren Singh-led government,” Sangma stated.

The NPP, which holds seven seats in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, had been a key ally of the BJP in the state. This withdrawal of support comes at a critical juncture when Manipur is grappling with a prolonged humanitarian crisis, widespread unrest, and mounting public frustration.

While the BJP still holds a majority in the Assembly with support from other allies, the NPP’s exit adds to the growing pressure on Biren Singh’s government to address the deteriorating law and order situation.

The withdrawal reflects increasing dissatisfaction with the administration’s handling of the crisis, which has left Manipur in a state of persistent violence and displacement. Sangma’s announcement has drawn attention to the need for renewed and effective leadership to steer the state towards stability.

As the political landscape in Manipur shifts, all eyes remain on how the BJP-led government will navigate the challenges ahead while addressing the deep-rooted issues fueling the unrest.
