Meghalaya: NPP’s Exit from Manipur Alliance Won’t Impact Meghalaya Coalition, Says BJP
Shillong: The Conrad K Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) has withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, citing the deteriorating situation in the violence-hit state.
However, the BJP in Meghalaya has ruled out any possibility of the NPP ending its alliance with the party in the state, where both parties are key coalition partners.
Addressing the media, BJP leader and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak asserted that the NPP is unlikely to take a similar step in Meghalaya. “If the NPP withdraws its support here, the coalition would collapse, raising significant concerns about governance. Such a move seems improbable,” Marak said, emphasizing the stability of the Meghalaya coalition.
The withdrawal in Manipur comes amidst escalating violence and a deepening crisis in the state. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed grave concern over the situation in Manipur, highlighting the failure of efforts by both the central and state governments to restore normalcy.
Sangma stated that the NPP’s decision to withdraw was not politically motivated but aimed at promoting peace and stability. “The lack of confidence in the system and absence of trust-building measures have worsened the situation. After witnessing no improvement and further deterioration, we have lost faith in Chief Minister Biren Singh’s leadership. Continuing support in such conditions is untenable,” Sangma remarked.
While the NPP’s exit from the alliance in Manipur has added to the region’s political volatility, its alliance with the BJP in Meghalaya remains intact. Observers note that the stability of the coalition in Meghalaya is critical for governance and is unlikely to be impacted by developments in Manipur.
