Meghalaya Partners with Brahmaputra Board for Comprehensive River Master Plan

Shillong: The Government of Meghalaya has initiated a landmark collaboration with the Brahmaputra Board to create a comprehensive River Master Plan, covering ten river sub-basins across the state.

This ambitious project represents a pivotal shift in Meghalaya’s approach to water resource management, aiming to tackle key challenges such as water scarcity, flooding, and soil erosion.

The inaugural meeting for the initiative, held at the Meghalaya Secretariat Conference Hall, was led by Additional Chief Secretary Dr. PS Ahammed and Brahmaputra Board Chairman Dr. Ranbir Singh.

The master plan will utilise advanced technology to collect extensive data across sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry, industries, and tourism, ensuring a holistic approach to water management.

In a significant move, the Brahmaputra Board and the Department of Water Resources formalised their collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

The agreement includes an integrated water rejuvenation project in Shiliang Um, East Khasi Hills, highlighting the initiative’s focus on sustainability and localised interventions.

Various state departments have pledged their support, ensuring the plan remains practical and adaptable to future needs.

Brahmaputra Board Chairman Dr. Ranbir Singh described the initiative as crucial for Meghalaya’s economic development and improving livelihoods, while also safeguarding the state’s natural resources.

The master plan has garnered strong backing from state officials, who view it as a transformative strategy to balance economic growth with environmental conservation.

With this initiative, Meghalaya takes a significant step toward sustainable water resource management, aiming to secure long-term benefits for its people and environment.
