Meghalaya Plans Deployment of 300 Facial Recognition Cameras Across Shillong
Northeast Desk, 4th May: The Meghalaya government has unveiled plans to install approximately 300 cameras equipped with facial recognition technology across Shillong. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma revealed that the installation of these cameras aims to deter lawbreakers and enhance security measures in the city.
Under the Smart City project, funds totaling Rs 150 crore have been allocated for the establishment of the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC), Sangma announced. “Work is already underway, with high-level cameras being installed at various junctions. Close to 300 cameras will be deployed citywide, bolstered by facial recognition software,” he elaborated.
The chief minister indicated that the inauguration of the integrated command centre is expected by July. It will feature over 300 cameras equipped with facial recognition software. Sangma emphasized that while achieving comprehensive detection may pose challenges, the mere presence of these cameras will act as a strong deterrent. He also highlighted that with the expansion of the camera network, public awareness of surveillance would increase.
Expressing confidence in the initiative’s effectiveness, Sangma stated that it would contribute to reducing incidents and criminal activities. Despite acknowledging the limitations imposed by spatial constraints, he affirmed the government’s commitment to initiating the deployment and gradually expanding it in the future.
