Meghalaya Police Arrest Facebook User for Pro-Terror Comments; ABVP Files FIR Against Assam University Student

Shillong/Silchar: In swift action against online hate speech and support for terrorism, Meghalaya Police have arrested 30-year-old Simon Shylla from Umlyngka for allegedly posting social media comments in support of the terrorists involved in the recent Pahalgam attack in Jammu & Kashmir.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the arrest, stating that Shylla, using the Facebook name “Man Shylla”, had commented on a news post from an Assam-based channel, allegedly praising the attackers and inciting further violence against specific communities in Northeast India. Authorities said such comments posed a serious threat to national unity and integrity.

The Special Cell tracked Shylla to his residence and took him into custody for questioning and further legal action.

In a related development in Silchar, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has lodged an FIR against Assam University student Md. Bahauddin Choudhury, pursuing computer science, for allegedly posting inflammatory content related to the same terror attack.

ABVP claimed that Choudhury’s post, dated April 23, used derogatory language against those condemning the attack and attempted to provoke communal discord. While Choudhury has issued a public apology on Facebook for his “aggressive and offensive language,” ABVP continues to demand legal action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

University authorities have initiated an internal inquiry into the matter, while student groups have called for zero tolerance toward content promoting or justifying terrorism.
