Meghalaya Police Arrest Four, Including HNYM Members, for Alleged Extortion and Threats
Northeast Desk, 19th September: Meghalaya police have arrested four individuals, including two members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM), in connection with an alleged extortion attempt that escalated into threats against a local family. The arrests followed a weeks-long investigation into aggressive demands for money, culminating in a frightening home invasion.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, identified the suspects as Garnett Gedian Khongwir (30) and Kyrshanbor Lyngdoh (38), both active members of HNYM, along with Thounaujam David Singh (41) and Narendra Kabrambam (29).
The case first came to light on August 8, when the victim received a phone call demanding Rs 10 lakh. Despite mounting pressure, the victim refused to pay. The situation escalated on August 20, when three suspects allegedly forced their way into the victim’s home, threatening the victim’s daughter, who was home alone at the time.
Superintendent Nongtnger confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with the police committed to uncovering the full extent of the criminal activity. The involvement of youth movement members in such serious offenses has raised concern within the community.
A formal complaint was lodged on August 24, which set in motion the investigation that ultimately led to the arrests. Authorities are determined to ensure justice and prevent further incidents of this nature.
