Meghalaya Police Bust Motorcycle Theft Racket, Multiple Arrests Made
Shillong: Meghalaya police have successfully dismantled a motorcycle theft operation after weeks of investigation, leading to multiple arrests and the recovery of stolen vehicles. The crackdown comes amid rising cases of vehicle thefts across the state.
Authorities intercepted two suspected thieves at Sohra Rim while they were transporting a stolen Suzuki Gixxer motorcycle. The suspects, identified as 19-year-old Babu Marak from Dalia Shella and 30-year-old Sunday N. Sangma from Samanda, East Garo Hills, were allegedly attempting to smuggle the vehicle to Bangladesh. Investigations revealed that the motorcycle had been stolen from Smit and was handed over to them at Mawkdok by another group of thieves operating in Shillong.
In a related operation, police arrested three more suspects—Barabor Namsaw (28) from Jirang, Patharkhmah; Banroilang Iawrod (19) from Kynbahmalai, Phlangwambroi Mawsynram; and Declin Warjri (20) from Nongmensong, Shillong. The trio was allegedly responsible for stealing multiple vehicles, including the Suzuki Gixxer. A stolen scooter was also recovered from their possession during the raid at 7th Mile EKH.
The crackdown continued as officers at a Sohra checkpoint encountered another stolen motorcycle, an R15 bearing the license plate ML05AA 3297. The bike had been reported stolen from Mawiong Umjapung on February 23. The rider, upon spotting the checkpoint, abandoned the vehicle at Nongsawlia and fled.
All arrested individuals are being charged under Madanrting Police Station Case No. 31(02)25 u/s 303(2) BNS. Police are continuing their investigation to track down other members of the organized theft network.
