Meghalaya Police Crack Down on HNLC Cadres in East Khasi Hills District

Northeast Desk, 12th July: In a significant breakthrough, Meghalaya Police have apprehended two more members associated with the banned outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) in East Khasi Hills District. This development follows the earlier arrest of four HNLC members last month, underscoring ongoing efforts to curb insurgent activities in the region.

The newly apprehended individuals are identified as Kynsaijun Thabah, aged 32, hailing from Umlyngka, Kynton Block-II, and Sanborlang Rapsang, aged 38, from Mawlai, Umjajew. Their capture was facilitated by intelligence provided by one of the previously detained HNLC cadres.

The arrests stem from information revealed during the interrogation of Cyfrank Paul Pariat, one of the arrested members last month. Pariat disclosed details of training he and Thabah received in Bangladesh between mid-July and mid-August 2023, leading to Thabah’s apprehension on July 5. Thabah admitted to his affiliation with HNLC during interrogation and implicated Rapsang in facilitating logistical support for his travel to Bangladesh.

Last month’s detainees, including Cyfrank Paul Pariat, Kitbok Mujai, Barnabas Lyngdoh, and Wanpynshngai Dympep, face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Their arrests have been pivotal in unraveling the network and operations of the HNLC in the region.

The arrests reflect the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order in Meghalaya and addressing security threats posed by insurgent groups. Authorities continue to intensify efforts to dismantle militant networks and ensure peace and stability in the state.

The ongoing crackdown underscores the challenges posed by insurgency in Meghalaya and the concerted efforts to neutralize such threats through proactive law enforcement measures.
