Meghalaya Police Recover Arms Cache in East Garo Hills

Shillong: A major cache of arms and ammunition was recovered by police in East Garo Hills, raising suspicions of past militant activity in the region.

The operation, conducted near Chibilbang village, led to the discovery of a country-made firearm, two live mortar shells, and 428 rounds of suspected AK-series ammunition.

The search was launched on January 29 following credible intelligence inputs.

A special operations team from Williamnagar began combing the dense jungle area under Rongjeng Police Station around 10 pm.

After hours of intensive efforts, the team uncovered the buried cache near a large tree at approximately 1 am on January 30.

East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, SA Rynjah, suggested that the recovered weapons may be linked to the now-defunct Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), a militant group that once operated in the region.

Authorities are now investigating the origins and intended use of the arms, with efforts underway to determine if any remnants of the group are still active in the area.
