Meghalaya Police Seize Rs 2.1 Crore Worth of Illicit Drugs, Nabs Interstate Trafficker

Northeast Desk, 1st May: Meghalaya Police continued their crackdown on illegal drugs trafficking, achieving a major breakthrough on April 30 with the seizure of illicit drugs valued at Rs 2.1 crore and the apprehension of an interstate drug trafficker.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma lauded the efforts of the East Jaintia Hills Police for their successful operation, emphasizing their commitment to creating a drug-free Meghalaya. Sangma took to social media to express his appreciation, highlighting the significance of the seizure, which marked the second major drug haul in just three days.

The seizure comes amidst heightened vigilance by electoral authorities in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya reported a series of significant seizures across the state, aligning with the Model Code of Conduct to ensure fair and transparent elections.

Between March 16 and April 4, 2024, authorities confiscated various items, including cash, liquor, drugs, freebies, and other illicit goods. The seizures during this period amounted to cash worth Rs 31.87128 lakhs, 27,348.37 liters of liquor valued at Rs 42.56995 lakhs, 123,936.91 grams of drugs worth Rs 139.08918 lakhs, 1,345 freebies priced at Rs 0.6568 lakhs, and other items totaling Rs 292.90801 lakhs.

These proactive measures underscore the authorities’ dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and preventing malpractices. With the Lok Sabha elections approaching, such stringent actions aim to deter any attempts at influencing voters through illegal means, ensuring a level playing field for all candidates.
