Meghalaya Police Strike Blow Against Cross-Border Drug Trafficking with Two Key Arrests
East Khasi Hills – The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the East Khasi Hills police has intensified its crackdown on cross-border drug trafficking, arresting two key smugglers from Assam’s Cachar district this week in separate operations. The arrests are seen as significant steps in disrupting drug supply networks in the region.
In the most recent operation on October 21, ANTF officers apprehended 29-year-old Hanif Ahmed Laskar from Gobindapur Part-I, Cachar, seizing 196 yaba tablets. Laskar was found with synthetic drugs weighing over 19 grams, marking a major haul of illicit substances.
Earlier in the week, another major arrest took place at a checkpoint in Mawryngkneng, where 26-year-old Mastak Ahmed Mazumder, also from Gobindapur, was caught with nearly 57 grams of heroin hidden in five soap boxes.
Both suspects were found with backpacks containing mobile phones and identification documents at the time of arrest. Police believe the men were actively involved in a larger narcotics trafficking network operating across the Northeast.
The East Khasi Hills police commended the efforts of the ANTF, emphasizing the force’s ongoing collaboration with local communities to identify and intercept drug shipments. These arrests underscore the department’s commitment to tackling the rising tide of narcotics trafficking in the region, particularly along cross-border routes.
Officials highlighted that sustained efforts, bolstered by intelligence sharing and active community participation, are key to breaking the drug supply chains that plague the Northeast. Further investigations are underway to trace the full extent of the trafficking network.
