Meghalaya: Polo Complex Opens, Ushering in New Era for Shillong’s Urban Landscape
Shillong, Meghalaya: In a landmark event for Meghalaya’s urban transformation, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday inaugurated the much-anticipated Polo Shopping Complex in Shillong. The ₹100.33 crore project, a cornerstone of the Shillong Smart City Mission, is set to inject fresh dynamism into the city’s commercial heart and create a plethora of opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, welcoming the Union Minister, underscored that the complex symbolises not just a retail hub but the broader vision for progress and development in Shillong. He lauded the Finance Minister’s unwavering support for the North-eastern region, particularly Meghalaya, acknowledging her role in securing substantial infrastructure funding through the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme.
This sprawling 9,686-square-meter complex marks the completion of its first phase, with a second phase already under construction. Upon full completion, it will boast 109 modern retail outlets, a dedicated food court, and comprehensive parking facilities for 86 cars and 50 two-wheelers, including provisions for electric vehicle charging. Further enhancing the user experience will be a children’s gaming zone, 12 escalators, and five lifts.
The project proudly integrates environmental sustainability, featuring a 75-kilolitre sewage treatment plant, rainwater harvesting systems, and solar energy generation. For public safety, 110 CCTV cameras and 12 emergency exits have been incorporated, complemented by a robust Building Management System for efficient operations.
Chief Minister Sangma also highlighted the sanctioning and ongoing work for a riverfront development project exceeding ₹35 crore, further exemplifying the concerted efforts towards a holistic urban upliftment. The inauguration concluded with a thoughtful initiative: ₹1 lakh cheques were distributed to eight local headmen under the “My City Campaign,” empowering dorbar shnongs (local councils) to drive development at the grassroots level, with transparency ensured through utilisation certificates submitted to the Shillong Municipal Board.
Dignitaries present at the significant occasion included Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Health Minister Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, Chief Secretary Donald Phillips Wahlang, and other senior state officials, all witnessing a new chapter unfold for Shillong’s urban future.
