Meghalaya Power Minister Commits to Uninterrupted Electricity for All Villages Within Five Years

Northeast Desk, 9th July: Meghalaya’s Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal has set an ambitious goal to provide uninterrupted electricity to every village in the state within the next five years. This announcement was made during an interaction program with Nokmas and village elders in Aminda Rangsa, Gambegre, West Garo Hills on July 8.

“Within next 5 years, power or electricity in every village should be uninterrupted,” Mondal stated. He emphasized the necessity of advanced substations and improved voltage systems to meet this target.

Mondal acknowledged several immediate challenges, including three villages in Gambegre currently without electricity, disruptions caused by the rainy season, cyclones, thunderstorms, and issues with power tripping. He assured the attendees that a new substation at Damalgre would be operational within 2-3 months, addressing some of these concerns.

Sanjay Goyal, Commissioner & Secretary of the Power Department, explained that the meeting aimed to understand and address local issues. “We are now focusing on area-wise, block-wise as to what are the issues and the problems, especially in the Power sector,” he said.

The interaction program is part of a broader initiative to improve power infrastructure and service delivery across Meghalaya, particularly in rural areas. Officials from the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL) were present to gather firsthand information about the challenges faced by residents.
