Meghalaya Power Minister Confident of NPP Victory in Gamebgre By-Polls

Shillong: With the Gamebgre by-election set for November 13, Meghalaya Power Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) leader Abu Taher Mondal expressed confidence in the party’s chances, citing the frequent trend of ruling governments winning by-polls.

Addressing reporters, Mondal noted that by-elections tend to favor the incumbent administration, suggesting that the NPP is well-positioned to secure victory in the upcoming contest.

Mondal pointed to voter statistics indicating robust support for the NPP, highlighting the party’s community engagement efforts as a cornerstone of its campaign strategy. “The support we see from voters has been encouraging, and we are focused on maintaining close outreach to ensure a win,” he remarked.

Adding to the stakes, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s wife, Mehtab Chandee Sangma, will represent the NPP in the by-election. Her candidacy, officially filed in the presence of CM Sangma, underscores the NPP’s commitment to retaining the seat. In addition to Sangma, five other candidates are competing in the election, representing a diverse political spectrum.

The opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fielded Sadhiarani Sangma, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put forward Bernard N Marak. The Congress party’s candidate is Jingjang M Marak. Independent candidates Jerry A Sangma and Sengkrabirth M Marak are also in the race, adding to the field’s competitive nature.

As campaigning intensifies, NPP leaders emphasize their confidence, rallying support across the constituency. The Gamebgre by-election promises to be closely watched, with key political parties vying for voter support in a race that will serve as a crucial indicator of political sentiment in Meghalaya.
