Meghalaya Prepares for Second Phase of Shillong’s Decongestion Plan

Northeast Desk, 4th May: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has announced the forthcoming launch of the second phase of Shillong’s decongestion plan. This initiative, slated to commence after the conclusion of the Model Code of Conduct, aims to address urban congestion issues plaguing the city.

Under Sangma’s guidance, ongoing efforts have been focused on tackling various congestion-related challenges, including parking woes, inconsistent lane widths, and the shortage of recreational spaces within Shillong.

A pivotal aspect of the decongestion strategy involves the construction of multi-level car parks, boasting a combined capacity of 1254 parking spaces. These facilities are strategically planned for deployment across key areas within Shillong, such as Motrphran, Polo – Phase I, Additional Secretariat, Mawkhar, Polo – Phase II, Laitumkhrah market, Anjalee, Mowlonghat, and Khlieh Iew.

In addition to spearheading urban development initiatives, Chief Minister Sangma recently convened a meeting with a delegation from UNICEF, led by Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, Chief of Field Office in Assam and North East States. The discussions revolved around exploring collaborative interventions between Meghalaya and UNICEF to enhance early childhood development programs across the state. This proactive approach underscores Meghalaya’s commitment to holistic and sustainable development, encompassing both urban infrastructure enhancement and social welfare initiatives.
