Meghalaya Prepares for Union Ministers’ Visit to Boost Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Sectors
Northeast Desk, 28th June: Meghalaya’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister, AL Hek, announced on June 27 that several Union ministers are set to visit the state to bolster the animal husbandry and fisheries sectors, crucial for local livelihoods. Following his meeting with Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, George Kurien, on June 23, Hek emphasized the need for central government support amid concerns over declining milch livestock.
Hek revealed plans for upcoming visits from newly appointed Union ministers after discussions with key figures including Union Minister for Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Minister of State Bhagirath Choudhury, among others.
Highlighting the significance of livestock and poultry sectors, Hek noted their substantial contribution to India’s agricultural output, approximating 6%. He stressed that in Meghalaya, focus remains on traditional species such as pigs and cattle, catering to local demands.
Moreover, Hek underscored the region’s rich potential in fisheries, noting its abundance of freshwater fish species and status as a global hotspot for freshwater fish biodiversity. This underscores Meghalaya’s readiness to harness its natural resources for economic growth and sustainability.
