Meghalaya Rejects US Travel Advisory, Asserts It’s ‘Safest Place in the World’
Shillong: The Meghalaya government has strongly refuted a recent travel advisory issued by the United States, which cautioned its citizens against visiting the northeastern state due to alleged risks of terrorism and violence. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, dismissed the advisory as “misleading and unfounded,” expressing dismay over its origins.
Tynsong underscored Meghalaya’s reputation as a globally safe and hospitable destination. “Meghalaya is one of the safest places in the world, and people of the state are known for their hospitality,” he stated, challenging any sceptics to engage with those who have experienced the state firsthand. He hailed visiting tourists as the “real ambassadors” of Meghalaya’s peaceful environs and warm populace.
Adding to the state’s robust defence, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh highlighted the thriving tourism sector, projecting a target of 2 million visitors this year. He pointed to a bustling year-round calendar of events, including the popular Cherry Blossom festivals, as testament to the state’s appeal. To further enhance visitor experience, the government has launched a ‘Tourist Buddies’ programme, with 50 such buddies being recruited for key tourist spots in the state capital like Ward’s Lake, Golf Links, and Khyndai Lad, to assist and guide tourists.
A senior tourism official further revealed ambitious plans for the sector, with over Rs 1,000 crore earmarked for tourism infrastructure development. The tourism industry already serves as a significant employer in Meghalaya, providing livelihoods to over 50,000 individuals, second only to the state government in job creation. The unified stance from the state government aims to dispel any negative perceptions and reinforce Meghalaya’s image as a serene and welcoming abode for travellers.
