Meghalaya Seeks Central Assistance to Boost Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Sectors

Northeast Desk, 24th June: Meghalaya’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister, AL Hek, has called on the central government for support in enhancing the state’s animal husbandry and fisheries sectors. These industries are vital sources of livelihood for many residents, especially in rural areas.

In a recent meeting with George Kurien, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Hek expressed concerns about a decline in milch livestock numbers, which he noted is particularly troubling given the importance of these sectors to the poor. Hek underscored the critical role that animal husbandry and fisheries play in providing livelihoods, and emphasized the potential for expansion in the livestock and poultry industries, which contribute approximately 6 percent to India’s livestock.

Hek highlighted that in Meghalaya, there is a strong reliance on traditional livestock such as pigs and cattle to meet local needs. He noted a growing trend towards rearing less capital-intensive animals, which suits the predominantly backyard-based livestock and poultry farming practices in the state.

Regarding fisheries, Hek pointed out that Meghalaya boasts vast and diverse fisheries resources, with a rich array of freshwater fish species. The state is recognized as one of the world’s hotspots for freshwater fish biodiversity, making it an area with significant potential for growth in this sector.

Hek also mentioned that enhancing these sectors could lead to improved employment opportunities. He indicated plans to draft a proposal aimed at modernizing the animal husbandry and fisheries industries to maximize their potential and benefits for the state’s economy.

The minister’s appeal for central assistance underscores the importance of these sectors in providing sustainable livelihoods and contributing to the local economy, while also addressing the need for modernization and expansion to meet growing demands and opportunities.
