Meghalaya Sees Significant Revenue Growth Ahead of Budget 2025-26
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the state’s own tax revenue has increased substantially, from Rs 1,450 crore in 2018 to Rs 3,217 crore currently.
This growth is attributed to the government’s efforts to plug loopholes and improve revenue collection, particularly in the excise sector.
The excise revenue has also seen a significant increase, rising from Rs 199 crore to Rs 458 crore over six years. Sangma expressed hope that this figure will cross Rs 520 crore this year.
He emphasized the crucial role of technology in minimizing leakages, stating, “We have to implement technology in a correct manner to monitor every movement and every sale that takes place.”
In addition to revenue growth, the state has also increased its budget for schools and higher and technical education.
Expenditure in this sector has risen from Rs 1,085 crore to Rs 2,338 crore, reflecting a 14% jump. Nearly 2,500 schools have received new buildings or renovations over the last four years.
The Chief Minister also announced that the Shillong Medical College will begin operations in September-October 2025.
However, he acknowledged challenges in staffing at the Tura Medical College, particularly the shortage of doctors and professors. Efforts are underway to address this issue.
Sangma expressed optimism about private investment in education, stating that the state is pushing for more private universities in the region.
He acknowledged the complexities within the education system but expressed confidence that with sustained efforts, the sector would improve.
