Meghalaya: Shillong Celebrates Groundbreaking of Landmark Indigenous Cultural Hub

In a ceremony marking a significant milestone for cultural preservation, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma joined members of the Seng Khasi Kmie organisation to lay the foundation stone for a new Indigenous Cultural Centre in Mawkhar, Shillong, on Thursday. This development heralds a fresh chapter in the long-standing efforts to safeguard and promote the unique Khasi heritage.

The envisioned centre, a culmination of 125 years of unwavering dedication by Seng Khasi, is designed to be more than just a structure. It will function as a dynamic educational platform, offering both locals and tourists an immersive experience into the rich tapestry of Khasi traditions. Chief Minister Sangma, speaking at the event, highlighted the centre’s dual role, stating, “It will not only deepen Seng Khasi’s efforts in preserving our language, beliefs, and way of life, but also offer a space for visitors to experience the richness of Khasi culture.”

Beyond its role as a tourist destination, the centre is envisioned as a crucial link connecting younger generations with their ancestral roots. Chief Minister Sangma described it as “a living legacy,” underscoring its potential to transmit the wisdom and heritage of the Khasi people to future custodians.5 This initiative comes at a critical time, as the need to protect indigenous cultures from external pressures becomes increasingly vital.

The Seng Khasi organisation, established in 1899, has been a steadfast guardian of Khasi customs and traditions, navigating the complexities of historical changes and external influences within Meghalaya.6 Their enduring commitment to cultural preservation continues to be a driving force in safeguarding the unique identity of the northeastern Indian state.
