Meghalaya: Shillong Surpasses Baku as Top Travel Destination for Indians in 2025, Says Skyscanner Report

Meghalaya: Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, has emerged as the most sought-after travel destination for Indian travelers in 2025, surpassing Azerbaijan’s Baku, according to Skyscanner’s latest Travel Trends Report. The picturesque hill station, often referred to as the “Scotland of the East,” has captivated the attention of travelers, marking a significant shift in travel preferences.

The report, which surveyed 1,000 Indian respondents, highlights Shillong’s appeal amidst a diverse list of trending destinations, including Langkawi, Malaysia, which secured the third spot. The findings indicate that 66% of Indian travelers plan to increase their trips in the coming year, demonstrating a strong enthusiasm for travel.

Emerging destinations such as Tromso in Norway, Tashkent in Uzbekistan, and al-Ula in Saudi Arabia are gaining traction as travelers seek unique experiences. Additionally, cost-conscious travelers will find attractive deals in Almaty, Kazakhstan, where flight prices have dropped by 44%. Other notable price reductions include Jakarta at 27% and both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur at 19%.

Financial considerations remain a priority for travelers, with 65% focusing on hotel costs, followed closely by flights (62%) and dining (54%). Despite budget constraints, an impressive 86% of respondents intend to maintain or increase their spending on flights in 2025.

The report also uncovers new travel trends, particularly among younger travelers. Nearly half of those aged 25-34 plan to attend live sports events, driven by the popularity of Formula 1 races, with Abu Dhabi experiencing a 188% increase in bookings ahead of its December race.

Gaming-inspired travel is another significant trend, with 57% of Gen Z travelers expressing interest in visiting locations featured in video games. Furthermore, astronomical tourism is gaining popularity, as 53% of respondents show interest in stargazing experiences, while 44% list viewing the Northern Lights as a top bucket-list item.

These findings from Skyscanner underscore a vibrant and evolving travel landscape for Indian travelers, highlighting a blend of cost-conscious planning and a desire for unique experiences in 2025.
