Meghalaya: Shillong Traffic Police Issues Urgent Helmet Mandate for Child Two-Wheeler Passengers

Shillong: In a move aimed at bolstering child safety, Shillong’s Traffic Police has implemented a strict new directive requiring all children riding on two-wheelers to wear helmets. This measure comes as a response to growing concerns over the vulnerability of young passengers in traffic incidents.

The newly issued advisory specifically targets children positioned in front of the rider or those seated as pillion passengers, highlighting the disproportionate risk they face. Authorities have observed a concerning trend where adult riders consistently wear helmets, while their young companions remain unprotected. This disparity significantly elevates the potential for severe injuries should an accident occur.

Enforcement of this mandate will be rigorous, with violators facing penalties as outlined in the Motor Vehicles Act. The police have made it clear that non-compliance will not be tolerated, underscoring the seriousness of this safety initiative.

The Superintendent of Traffic Police has directly appealed to parents and guardians, urging them to prioritize their children’s safety by adhering to the new regulations. This appeal emphasizes the collective responsibility in fostering a secure road environment for all. It is pertinent to remember that Meghalaya has pre-existing laws mandating helmet use for all pillion riders, a regulation now being more stringently applied to the protection of young passengers.
