Meghalaya Smart Meter Project Stalled Due to High Costs

Shillong: The implementation of the Smart Meter project in Meghalaya has hit a snag due to concerns over the high cost of installation.

Power Minister AT Mondal revealed that the state government is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Power to proceed with the project. The cost quoted by the contractor is significantly higher than the state’s estimated budget.

Similar high costs have been observed in other Northeastern states, prompting the state government to raise the issue with the Union Ministry of Power.

However, the Centre has insisted that the state proceed with the project, arguing that savings from the project will eventually offset the higher costs.

Minister Mondal assured the public that the accuracy of the smart meters is a top priority and that the government will address any concerns raised by consumers. He explained that smart meters provide more accurate readings, which may result in some consumers seeing slightly higher bills initially.

The state government is currently awaiting a response from the Ministry of Power regarding the cost escalation and seeking a resolution to move forward with the implementation of the Smart Meter project.
