Meghalaya: South West Garo Hills Open Inter-School District Chess Championship 2024 Concludes Successfully

Shillong: The South West Garo Hills Open Inter-School District Chess Championship 2024 concluded at St. Mary’s School, Ghatgre, Mukdangra, celebrating the strategic brilliance and competitive spirit of young chess enthusiasts from across the district.

Organized by the South West Garo Hills District Chess Association (SWGHDCA) and supported by the *State Council of Science, Technology & Environment, Meghalaya, the championship was held under the “Chess in School” programme with the theme *“Queen’s Gambit.”**

The event kicked off with an opening ceremony led by SWGHDCA Secretary Henrych D Sangma, while Sister Sonitha R Marak, Principal of St. Mary’s School, officially inaugurated the competition by making the ceremonial first move. The closing ceremony featured Dr. Sengkham Marak as the chief guest, who commended the young players for their exceptional talent, skill, and determination.

The tournament witnessed intense competition as young participants demonstrated their chess prowess across multiple rounds.

    Both players emerged as joint champions with 6.5 points each.

  • Breanlerry R Sangma of Nirupama Memorial Secondary School, Garobadha
    Both participants shared the title with 5 points each.
  • Under-12 Category
  • Arish R Marak of Nirupama Memorial Secondary School, Garobadha
  • Flora R Marak of St. Dominic Savio School, Garobadha
  • Dianchi Ch. Marak of Sun Town English School
    The trio shared the title, scoring 5 points each.

The championship not only showcased the growing popularity of chess among students but also underscored its importance in developing critical thinking, focus, and strategic planning.
