Meghalaya Sports Facility Upgrades Remain in Limbo, Minister Offers Vague “Under Consideration” Response
Shillong: A cloud of uncertainty hangs over promised sports facility upgrades in Meghalaya, as key projects remain unsanctioned, leaving communities in Sohryngkham and Mawryngkneng awaiting improvements. During the recent Meghalaya Budget Session on March 11th, the spotlight fell on the stalled initiatives, revealing a lack of concrete progress.
MLA Heavingstone Kharpran, representing the concerns of his constituents, inquired about the status of vital developments at several local playgrounds. These projects encompassed a range of enhancements, including the installation of artificial turf, the erection of fencing, and the construction of covered galleries, all aimed at bolstering recreational opportunities within the region.
However, in response to each query, Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri offered a consistent, yet ambiguous, reply: “Sir, it is under consideration.” This blanket statement provided little reassurance to those anticipating the promised upgrades. The projects in question include the comprehensive redevelopment of Madan Apkhaw in Sohryngkham Lulong, featuring artificial turf, fencing, and a covered gallery.
Similar projects at the Sohryngkham Neng playground and Thadlyndit in Sohryngkham Mawutieng, focusing on fencing and gallery construction, also remain in a state of limbo. Additionally, the Mawdngong, Sohryngkham Mawdieja playground awaits fencing, while the Mawryngkneng playground is slated for a more extensive overhaul, including fencing, a covered gallery, parking facilities, and artificial turf. The lack of definitive action on these projects has left residents questioning the government’s commitment to improving local sports infrastructure.
