Meghalaya SSA Teachers Continue Protest, Demand 100% Salary Hike

Northeast Desk, 9th October: The All Meghalaya Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan School Teachers’ Association (AMSSASTA) has entered its second week of protests, continuing to push for a 100% salary enhancement for the 13,000 SSA teachers in the state.

The teachers have initiated an indefinite sit-in, demanding that the government address their concerns over salary hikes, which have remained stagnant since 2016-17.

Wanpyndaphi Lapang, General Secretary of AMSSASTA, expressed disappointment that the government has yet to invite the association for talks.

Despite this, the association is firm on its stance, with members vowing to persist with their protest until a satisfactory resolution is reached.

While the state government has yet to formally respond, HM Shangpliang, an advisor to the education department, visited the protest site. However, no concrete assurances were provided during the visit.

Earlier in the week, AMSSASTA wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting his intervention to help increase salaries for SSA teachers.

The letter highlighted the disparity between rising living costs and the current pay scale, which ranges from ₹9,200 to ₹19,044 for Lower Primary teachers and ₹9,900 to ₹20,493 for Upper Primary teachers.

The association hopes for immediate action as they continue to push for fair wages that align with inflation and the rising cost of living.
