Meghalaya: State Disaster Management Department Bolsters Preparedness Ahead of Monsoon Season

Northeast Desk, 11th May: With the monsoon season looming on the horizon, the State Disaster Management Department has intensified efforts to enhance its disaster response mechanisms. In a significant development, a high-level meeting convened on May 10 brought together top officials from various departments to strategize and fortify preparedness measures.

Representatives from key sectors including Health, Public Works, Public Health Engineering, State Disaster Response Force, India Meteorological Department, Education, and Civil Defence converged to discuss strategies for fostering seamless coordination during calamities.

Sanjay Goyal, the Commissioner and Secretary for Disaster Management, underscored the crucial role of district administrators in leading relief efforts. He highlighted the directive given to Deputy Commissioners to conduct comprehensive vulnerability assessments and update district-level disaster management plans.

Efficient communication during emergencies was identified as paramount, with district authorities advised to closely collaborate with the MPRO to maintain robust communication channels.

To expedite relief operations, each Deputy Commissioner has been allocated a substantial sum of Rs 20 crore. Goyal emphasized the administration’s swift disbursement of financial aid, ensuring beneficiaries receive assistance within 48 hours of recent cyclonic storms.

Regular updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) are expected to bolster the Disaster Management Department’s ability to anticipate and mitigate potential risks during the monsoon season.

Amidst ongoing challenges, including recent natural calamities causing damage to approximately 2,800 houses, Goyal reassured prompt financial relief reaching affected beneficiaries within 48 hours of assessment.

In Shillong, a comprehensive risk assessment initiative is underway to minimize the potential impact on lives and property during the impending monsoon season. This proactive approach reflects the department’s commitment to safeguarding communities and mitigating the impact of natural disasters.
