Shillong: In a thrilling start to the Meghalaya State League (MSL) 2024, defending champions Rangdajied United FC met a formidable challenge, held to a goalless draw by Rymbai Skhenshynriah in Group D at Khliehriat.
Teams across five zones fiercely competed for early points, setting an intense tone for this year’s tournament.
Last year’s runners-up, Khliehmawlieh Youth Club, briefly seized the lead in Group B. A well-timed strike by Livingstone Nongrang in the 52nd minute raised hopes for victory.
However, seasoned Mawten SC player Oversharp Iawphniaw turned the game around, scoring twice, in the 54th and 87th minutes, and clinching a 2-1 comeback win for Mawten SC.
One of the season’s most remarkable performances unfolded in Shillong, where Mawlai SC dominated Seng Samla Mawmluh with an unprecedented 16-0 victory in Group F. Khrawkupar Jana and Donlad Diengdoh each struck four goals, while Fairming Suting added two more.
Contributions from Batskhemlang Mawlong, Robertson Khongriah, Overkindness L Mawnai, Banraplang Pyngrope, Romarius Laban, and Brolington Warlarpih pushed Mawlai SC to one of the largest winning margins in MSL history.
Elsewhere, Chipakkore and Atong Matgrik battled to a scoreless draw in Tura’s Group A. Meanwhile, Mawtari Myrdon celebrated a solid 3-1 win over Seinbhalang Shkentalang in Group E, with goals from James Warlarpih and two strikes from Baris Taro. Tip Rasmut managed a late first-half goal for Shkentalang but couldn’t alter the outcome.
As MSL 2024 unfolds, the opening matches have already delivered high-octane drama, with standout performances and high-stakes competition promising a riveting season ahead.
