Meghalaya: State Officials Foil Gold Smuggling Attempt, Seize Rs 1.42 Crore Worth
Northeast Desk, 16th December: Officers from CCP Shillong intercepted a Maruti EECO van at Diengpasoh, on the outskirts of Shillong, based on specific intelligence regarding a significant gold smuggling operation.
Upon interrogation, they uncovered the smuggled gold, which originated from a foreign source. It was cleverly concealed in a specially designed compartment within the middle seat’s floor area.
A total of 20 gold pieces, meticulously wrapped in black tape and neatly packed into four bundles, were successfully recovered. The overall weight amounted to 2331.82 grams, with an estimated value of Rs 1.42 crore. Subsequently, one individual has been apprehended, and investigations are currently underway.
In a separate incident, Customs officials seized 50 bags of Chinese garlic, collectively weighing 950 kg. These bags, bearing the brand name HUAGUANG, are suspected to have been illicitly smuggled across the border. Investigations into this matter are also in progress.
