Meghalaya Taxi Operators Call for Restrictions on Out-of-State Tourist Vehicles
Northeast Desk, 19th September: Local taxi operators in Meghalaya, represented by the All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxis Association (AKMTTA), are pushing for restrictions on tourist vehicles from other states. The association plans to send an open letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, requesting action to limit out-of-state vehicles from ferrying tourists to popular destinations.
During a gathering at Malki Ground in Shillong, AKMTTA members set a one-week deadline for the government to respond to their demands. They warned that if no action is taken, they will organize a rally and hunger strike.
The AKMTTA clarified that they are not calling for a complete ban on vehicles from other states. Instead, they propose that these vehicles drop tourists at designated points, where local taxi operators can then transport them to specific attractions. This request follows a recent black flag protest by the association, aimed at highlighting their grievances.
The taxi operators argue that while many tourist taxis from Assam operate in Meghalaya, taxis from Meghalaya are rarely allowed the same privileges in neighbouring states.
