Meghalaya Teen Honoured with Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for Bravery

Shillong: Kisen Wanniang, a 15-year-old from Mawlangwir village in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills, has been awarded the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for bravery.

The award was conferred by President Droupadi Murmu during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on Thursday, December 26.

Wanniang’s remarkable act of courage came to light when he saved four children from drowning in the Maweitksar River amid heavy rains.

While washing clothes by the river, Wanniang heard the cries of children, aged between 9 and 12, caught in the strong currents. Without hesitation, he risked his own life and dived into the swollen river, rescuing them one by one.

President Murmu, while presenting the awards to 17 young achievers across seven categories, lauded their exceptional accomplishments. “These children are the pride of the nation,” she remarked, urging others to draw inspiration from their dedication and courage. She also highlighted the importance of fostering such talent to build a progressive India by 2047.

Wanniang, who comes from a humble background and is the son of a single mother working as a domestic labourer, expressed his gratitude for the honour. He stated, “I hope my actions inspire others to help those in need.”

The young hero’s bravery has made him a source of pride for his village and a symbol of resilience and selflessness for the entire state of Meghalaya.
