Meghalaya: Three Arrested with Heroin Worth Rs 3.6 Crore Seized in East Jaintia Hills District

Northeast Desk, 9th May: A major narcotics bust unfolded in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district on May 8th, resulting in the arrest of three individuals after heroin worth Rs 3.6 crore was seized from their possession. The swift action by law enforcement authorities culminated in a significant breakthrough in the battle against drug trafficking in the region.

According to police reports, the arrests occurred during search operations conducted on two Guwahati-bound buses originating from Silchar while traversing through Meghalaya. The contraband, concealed within 40 soap boxes, comprised the sizable haul of heroin. Additionally, authorities seized 9 kilograms of ganja during the operation.

District Superintendent of Police (SP) Giri Prasad confirmed the successful operation, emphasizing the collaborative effort of law enforcement agencies in combating the illicit drug trade. The seizure of heroin underscores the persistent challenges posed by narcotics proliferation and the vigilance required to address them effectively.

In a related development, enforcement authorities also intercepted liquor worth Rs 17 crore, alongside a significant sum of cash and narcotics, during the enforcement of the model code of conduct. The concerted efforts of authorities yielded tangible results in curbing illegal activities and upholding law and order.

Furthermore, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) reported confiscating drugs worth Rs 54.6 lakh, including methamphetamine and cannabis, in separate operations. The enforcement agencies remain steadfast in their commitment to dismantling drug networks and ensuring the safety and well-being of communities.

The arrests and seizures serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the necessity for sustained efforts to combat this menace.
